Will Barrow’s new CD release, “State of Grace,” reflects the eclecticism of his performing and recording career. He’s joined by an all-star cast of Nashville musicians. The piano-driven title cut is both lyrical and funky, with backing vocals by Will’s pal and longtime musical associate, Suzy Bogguss. “Brown Liquor” is a rollicking barroom shuffle, with solos by Will and guitar great Pat Bergeson. “Peace and Love (Paz y Amor)” is in English and Spanish, with a salsa groove punctuated by a trombone section, and a soulful flute solo by Kenny Anderson. “Singin’ Your Song” is Will's tribute to legendary soul singer Donny Hathaway. The track features great blues guitar work by NYC’s Gary Sieger (who is on Donald Fagen’s new CD), as well as rich orchestration by Dan Serafini. “The Rain” is a solo piano piece... a kind of pianistic tone poem. “The Flood” recounts the great Nashville flood of ’10, with evocative slide guitar by Jerry McPherson. “Stay” is a N’Awlins flavored romp with a rumbling left hand piano figure, and more solo work by Bergeson and Barrow. Another solo piano piece, “Awakening,”, has an impressionistic vibe, and is a prelude to the record’s final song. “Can You Hear Me?” has a ‘70’s soul feel (a la the Isley Brothers), a hook-y acoustic piano figure and a Fender Rhodes solo by Will. Other musicians featured on the record include drummers Bryan Owings and Pete Abbott, bassists Steve Mackey and Michael Rhodes, trombonist Barry Green and percussionists Giovanni Rodriguez and Billy Ramirez. Other backing vocalists include Diana DeWitt, J’nae Fincannon, Laura Donohue and Chris Roberts.
